French Kitchen

Often what you get in a spec house is what the builder had leftover…not what you REALLY want.  Susan always wanted a French kitchen that was light and bright.  Thankfully, she got a great deal on the price of her brand new home making it so she could completely redo the kitchen before she even even moved in.   Yes, you read that right–BRAND new kitchen completely redone.   You’ll be shocked by the massive difference!

Oh, and, how cool is this…we even won an award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry for this kitchen remodeling project!

Before and After

Dark Masculine Kitchen | Skillman NJ | Distinctive Interior DesignsKitchen renovation project by award winning NJ interior designer Distinctive Interior Designs

We helped her take her look from a rather contemporary, masculine, dark kitchen to one that was bright, light and beautiful.

Key things that were wrong with the space before:  The floors and the cabinets were almost the same color, so you could barely tell where one started and the other ended.  This is a straight up violation of one of the primary rules in design–the need for contrasting layers.  Without contrast, this space felt depressing!

Doesn’t this now look like an extremely high end kitchen?  Well, we helped her manage to create the new look for under $45,000 even with all new counters and a new backsplash.  Check out the details below to see how we did it on a budget.

Wallet vs Dreams

All Susan knew was that she couldn’t STAND the current kitchen in her home, but wasn’t prepared to pay $100,000 to completely redo this 28×22 foot space.  Luckily, Susan found Distinctive Interior Designs through HomeAdvisor.com and we ‘clicked’ right from day one!

Our lead designer, Nicole’s suggestion:  let’s reface everything!  By refacing, we ensured that she stayed within a much more reasonable budget, turned the project around in a quicker time frame, AND kept her new home warranty intact!

Here’s the initial recommendations we showed Susan and she loved it all right from day one!

Refacing Cabinets–What’s it look like?

Refacing all starts with the initial picking of the ‘look’ and finding a great company to do the work.   We found our refacing resource while doing window treatments at a client’s home who had just had her kitchen refaced.  Nicole was so impressed by the new look that she snagged the company’s name and held it tight!

Next on this list is choosing the door style and hardware; in Susan’s case, solid doors weren’t the only thing involved as we recommended she change some of the cabinet doors to glass.  We happened to also help this client with selecting and sourcing new granite, display and undercabinet lighting resources, as well as backsplash selection and related installation.

After those decisions are made, it’s then off to the races with the cabinet refacing company!   They remove all the old doors/ drawers, sand down the exterior of the cabinet boxes, adhere a laminate that perfectly matches the new cabinet door color on every surface, and then route out the openings for every opening.  The new doors/drawers and all new crown molding is then added.

WOW!

The ‘piece de resistance’ of this entire space is the decorative hood.  Imagine if we had changed everything else, but then left that modern sleek stove vent unchanged….AWFUL!

Luckily our refacing source was also able to produce and install this gorgeous custom made decorative hood.  It was literally installed directly over the prior stainless steel vent, leaving enough space under the front edge to allow the controls to easily be used.

Final steps–great new granite and a snazzy marble backsplash!  LOVE IT!

We actually did work in almost every room of Susan’s home, including window treatments, blinds, custom built-ins, furniture, rugs and lighting.  If you’d like to see check out her great eclectic style, take a look under the gallery segment called Award Winning.
